Duluth, MN - A coalition of groups from the Twin Ports area hosts an event on Saturday, April 27th in downtown Duluth with the goal of mobilizing support for the climate solutions known the Green New Deal. The event features Winona LaDuke of Honor the Earth as the keynote speaker, a panel of local experts, and breakout discussions on a variety of topics and strategies: the specifics of legislative plans, labor organizing and the Green New Deal, direct action, regenerative agriculture, cleanwater issues, and national security/veterans affairs in relation to climate change. The event is free but freewill donations will be accepted at the door to help offset the costs (and to record the event and promote its agreements and findings). Any excess funds raised are to be donated to AICHO. A lunch will be served and activities for children are planned.
Registration begins at 9:30 AM with a traditional opening to be given by Skip Sandman. Winona LaDuke’s keynote address, titled “Lighting the Eighth Fire, Creating the Next Economy” is scheduled at 10:30. The panel discussion at 11:30 features LeaAnn Littlewolf (AICHO), Jamie Harvey (Bag it Duluth), Joel Sipress (Twin Ports Democratic Socialists of America), Brett Pence (MN Interfaith Power and Light) and James Hietala (Sierra Club).
The event will be held at the Dr. Robert Powless Cultural Center, 202 W 2nd Street, Duluth MN 55802 (google maps) which is the AICHO building with the iconic water protector mural shown above (photo credit to AICHO).
The event should conclude at 3 PM, leaving time in the day for attendees to join an optional action in the community, related to the Husky Refinery fire and threats posed by Husky resuming its operations.
