Indigenous leaders from nearby First Nations lead a mass protest and rally against the planned expansion of toxic tarsands infrastructure on October 14, 2019 at the Clearbrook, MN terminal.
The approval of the new Line 3 pipeline route is a commitment to toxic tarsands dependency that will be the equivalent of building 50 additional coal fired power plants, protestors said.
In addition to the risk of pipeline spills into area waterways considered sacred to the Anishinaabe, and to the staple wild rice plant populations that are considered a prophecy fulfilled in the migration story of ‘The People’ as ‘food on the water’ or “manoomin”, new pipeline construction threatens to bring into the area the ‘man camp’ culture that contributes to MMIWR, Missing and Murdered Indigenous Woman and Relatives.
